The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) stated in a news release that conversations on social media platforms have recently focused on the legitimacy of banknotes with the Star (*) sign on the number panel. In this regard, notice is given that, in a packet of one hundred serially numbered banknotes, the Star (*) symbol is placed in the number panel of a banknote that is used to replace banknotes that have been printed incorrectly. A Star (*) sign is added to the number panel between the prefix and the serial number, otherwise a banknote bearing this symbol is the same as any other valid banknote. The Star(*) icon indicates that the banknote has been changed or reproduced."
